Job Opportunity: Program Officer/Assistant

Summary
The Juneau Economic Development Council (JEDC) fosters a healthy and sustainable economic climate in Juneau and throughout Southeast Alaska. In collaboration with other organizations, the council implements initiatives to maintain, expand, and create economic opportunities. JEDC is a non-profit organization which was started in 1987 and works to achieve its mission through various projects and partnerships. Those efforts are intended to: Strengthen Juneau's Economy, Develop a Regionally Competitive Economy in Southeast Alaska, Bring Innovative Development approaches to Juneau, and help make our community a more highly desirable place to live and work. JEDC is a non-profit organization and receives its funding from the City and Borough of Juneau and other grants/contracts.

JEDC operates a revolving loan fund for small businesses, SpringBoard-which includes a Technology Transfer program for the Department of Defense, a Math and Science K-12 Education Coordination, a Knowledge Industry Network (KIN), and a Wood Products Development Service.

JEDC is seeking a Program Officer/Assistant (depending on experience) to develop, implement, and evaluate programs that further our goals. This position will be involved at a very detailed level to insure that the organization's Goals and Objectives and their associated programs and projects are met.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Program Management to understand the details with regard to all active programs and projects
  • Conduct research and convey results that summarize findings; present findings to Program management, external business Round Table Groups, or other Industry groups as necessary
  • Organize meetings and other events that include internal and external project members including coordinating meeting times, places, agendas, publishing meeting notes and tracking follow-up and action items
  • Work with other organizations throughout Juneau, the Southeast region, and the world to find Best Practices and solutions in order to achieve JEDC's mission critical initiatives
  • Initiate suggestions and solutions that apply to internal policies and procedures to improve JEDC's response times, reduce its costs, and improve adherence to grant requirements
  • Take the lead in working with other staff, consultants and members of the project team to achieve the desired business results
  • Provide assistance to organizations and individuals requesting information regarding JEDC or its active projects or programs
  • Represent, as designated, JEDC at community meetings, conferences and other events
  • Assist with the review of program proposals, grant writing, and other areas as requested by the
  • Program management
  • Assist and support other staff as requested by the Program management
  • Stay current with Juneau and Southeast AK's economic trends, headlines, and key Industry changes

Skills/Qualities/Experience

  • The successful candidate should possess the following experience and qualities:
  • Experience working and/or living in the Southeast Alaska region
  • Experience with both the non-profit and business sectors
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues
  • Able to work in a matrix organization with multiple managers whose projects are at various levels of completion and potentially requiring very diverse levels of involvement by the Program Officer/Assistant
  • Able to conduct research, and analyze economic and businesses information (financial information, statistical reports, industry publications, and business plans)
  • Able to form informal networks within various industries, and various State and Federal Government Departments for the purpose of obtaining research data, industry reports, and macro/micro trends vital to the success of JEDC's Goals and Objectives
  • Able to read, understand, analyze, and create project plans including budgets, financial statements, project plans, timelines, etc.
  • Experience assisting small business development and working with entrepreneurs
  • Experience and/or knowledge of the following Industries within AK primarily in Southeast AK: Seafood, Forest Products, Mining, Tourism, Government, and Research Labs
  • Able to work at a detailed level, ability to plan, organize and follow through on multiple priorities
  • Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills are a necessity
  • Excellent computer skills including familiarity with Windows environment; MS applications: Word, Visio, Excel, PowerPoint, web browsers, Internet data mining, and database applications.
  • Undergraduate College degree in Economics, Business Administration degree required; graduate degree, or course work and/or experience comparable to a graduate degree, preferred
  • Full-time position located in downtown Juneau, AK
  • Able to travel for site visits and to attend area meetings
