The Juneau Economic Development Council (JEDC) recently completed a two year project investigating utilization of Salmon by-products including, but not limited to; fishmeal, bone meal, fish oil, fish hydrolysate and compost.
Through a cooperative effort, (JEDC, Southeast Conference, Department of Environmental Conservation with partial funding from ADF&G's Southeast Sustainable Salmon Fund and the private sector) we have explored various methods and technologies as well as worked with Alaskan entrepreneurs, which can lead to economically viable means of utilizing "salmon wastes". An example of one of the innovative private sector endeavors is Juneau based Alaska Protein Recovery, which has launched into a large-scale by-product utilization enterprise.
Project Results/Publications
The project resulted in the following studies, which benefit Alaskan salmon fishermen, processors, the business community and governmental agencies by providing solid economic information for value added salmon byproduct utilization.
