Cognitive or Behavioral Emergencies

  • Sudden confusion or delirium: Could be caused by infection, medication changes, or dehydration.
  • Wandering: Common in those with dementia or Alzheimer’s, posing significant safety risks.
  • Aggression or severe agitation: May be related to dementia, mental illness, or medication interactions.

Preparation:

  • Routine and structure: Reduce disorientation in those with dementia.
  • Wander-alert devices: GPS trackers or smartwatches.
  • Power of attorney: Legal documents to handle decisions if mental capacity declines.

Response:

  • Sudden confusion: Rule out dehydration, infection, or medication reaction—seek medical attention.
  • Wandering/agitation: Keep a calm environment, remove triggers (e.g., noise, clutter), and gently redirect. Notify authorities quickly if someone is missing.
