Cognitive or Behavioral Emergencies
- Sudden confusion or delirium: Could be caused by infection, medication changes, or dehydration.
- Wandering: Common in those with dementia or Alzheimer’s, posing significant safety risks.
- Aggression or severe agitation: May be related to dementia, mental illness, or medication interactions.
Preparation:
- Routine and structure: Reduce disorientation in those with dementia.
- Wander-alert devices: GPS trackers or smartwatches.
- Power of attorney: Legal documents to handle decisions if mental capacity declines.
Response:
- Sudden confusion: Rule out dehydration, infection, or medication reaction—seek medical attention.
- Wandering/agitation: Keep a calm environment, remove triggers (e.g., noise, clutter), and gently redirect. Notify authorities quickly if someone is missing.
