
Brian Holst, Executive Director Juneau Economic Development Council (JEDC)
Brian Holst has served as JEDC’s Executive Director since early 2000 and has worked in community and economic development for more than twenty years. He has extensive experience managing governmental grants and contracts, including working with US Department of Defense, US Department of Agriculture, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Housing and Urban Development and the United States Agency for International Development. Additionally, he has implemented individual federal awards in excess of $40 million. Programs he has managed include micro-finance, small business assistance, value chain development, regional economic planning, and conflict prevention/mitigation. Brian has worked as an international consultant, small business owner, and has led large scale relief and development efforts in Latin America and Eastern Europe. He is an active member of Southeast Conference, served as the Alternate to the Mayor of Juneau on the Tongass Futures Roundtable, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Alaska Partnership for Economic Development and Chair of the Alaska Forward Initiative implementation committee, which was tasked with oversight of the execution of a statewide cluster development initiative. Through JEDC, Brian has implemented a wide range of Juneau-based economic development initiatives supporting affordable housing, senior housing, downtown and Willoughby District development, the Southeast Alaska Asset Map, and Industry Cluster Working Groups, among others. Brian is a thirty-year resident of Juneau, Alaska, though he worked out of the state and overseas for many years. He has a degree from the University Notre Dame in Politics/Philosophy/Economics and completed an Executive Certificate in Management and Leadership from the Mendoza Graduate School of Business at the University of Notre Dame.

Erin Walker-Tolles, Catholic Community Services Executive Director
Erin has lived in Juneau for more than two decades and has worked with non-profits and tribal social service providers to find the most effective ways to help Alaskan’s in need. Her career has included work for community non-profit social service providers, faith based non-profits, and most recently at the State of Alaska as Public Assistance Chief of Policy and Program Development. She is acting co-chair for the Southeast Regional Eldercare Coalition.

Scott Crabtree, CEO, Chief Happiness Officer at Happy Brain Science
Scott Crabtree helps people apply science to thrive at work. After earning a degree in cognitive science from Vassar College, he went on to lead the design and development of video games and other software. He discovered the science of thriving (positive psychology and other brain sciences) in 2003 and immediately became a passionate student and teacher of that research. He resigned his senior leadership position at Intel in 2011 to found Happy Brain Science.
His repeat Happy Brain Science clients include DreamWorks, Nike, Kaiser-Permanente, Boeing, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Activision, Blizzard Entertainment, and NBC.
He continues to use his game development background to ‘gamify’ all of his keynotes and workshops. He’s also produced the successful ‘serious card game’ Choose Happiness @ Work.
He applies the latest findings from adult learning and hears from audience members years later that they still remember and apply his immediately applicable techniques.

Dr. Charla Brown, JEDC Senior Management
Dr. Charla Brown joined us in May 2023 after supporting JEDC for several years as a consultant. She brings a unique perspective to our non-profit economic development organization gained from working several decades in various industries, such as airline transportation, energy, and ecommerce. With deep expertise in the strategic management of human capital, a sampling of her corporate accomplishments includes opening international offices for Fortune 100 companies, holding an expatriate assignment in a new office trading on the Australian Stock Exchange, growing a start-up operation’s employee base from 100 to 1,000 in four years, and conducting M&A due diligence. Additionally, she has developed and implemented various award-winning employer programs recognized by Fortune, the American Psychology Association, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and all related to the employee experience in terms of culture, flexibility, and innovation.Charla’s Alaska story began in 2013 when she and her family moved to Juneau. Her achievements over the past ten years include being awarded tenure at the University of Alaska Southeast where she held the rank of Associate Professor and served as the Chair for the Business and Public Administration Department for several years. As an academician, she improved the BBA’s emphasis in human resources management by adding change management, total employee rewards, and management development skills to the curriculum. Subsequently, the Society for Human Resources Management formally recognized the program as being aligned with the standards of the HR profession. While at the university, she was elected as an executive officer for the faculty union representing 1,000 Alaskans across the state and partnered with many stakeholders, including JEDC, to promote regional workforce development.In her new role at JEDC, Charla is responsible for programming, coordinating our internal operations, and overseeing organizational capacity. She also regularly shares her expertise on collaborative projects related to talent, entrepreneurship, and regional industries. In addition to teaching B.B.A. and M.B.A. courses, she also holds a Ph.D. in Applied Social Psychology, an M.S. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Sociology and has trained as a neutral arbitrator with U.S. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services.

Linda Kruger, PhD
Dr. Kruger is a retired Research Scientist, long-time Juneau water aerobics instructor, forest and nature therapy guide, and AARP Juneau leader who has been focusing on learning about and sharing information on brain health and what each of us can do to maintain a healthy brain.

Sarah Lewis, AIA, MSW
Sarah is a Professor of Extension for the Southeast Districts of the UAF Cooperative Extension Service. Home-based in Juneau, she has been teaching home skills, healthy lifestyle and local food workshops throughout Southeast Alaska since 2013. Though genetics play a role in ongoing brain health, you can also affect your brain’s health-span with your diet. Sarah will share how to include foods with brain-helpful nutrients in your daily diet.

Dr Emily Kane, ND
“Your food choices create the foundation for good health. Maintaining good gut integrity allows for optimal nutrient absorption so we get necessary nutrients without excess or empty calories.” Dr. Kane looks forward to sharing some pearls from 30+ years of providing nutritionally focused primary care (in Juneau).

Dr Benjamin Pinney, DMD
“The Oral-Systemic Connection is becoming increasingly clear that oral disease is not just a mouth problem, it is a whole-body problem”. Specifically, Dr Pinney will discuss how the oral microbiome and inflammation increase your risk for neurodegenerative disease and stroke. He will also provide some practical strategies you can implement today for better health.

Jim Swanson, MASST, DVR
Jim has lived in Juneau Alaska since June 1988. He is a High School graduate of JDHS and obtained his BA degree from the University of Alaska Southeast. Eventually Jim obtained his master’s degree from San Diego State University in Rehabilitation Counseling. He is currently the Southeast Regional Manager with the Alaska Division of Vocational Rehabilitation where he has worked since 1997. He enjoys gardening with his wife and going on hikes with his dog Lena.

Deborah Craig, Chair of the Juneau Commission on Aging (JCOA)
Deborah volunteered for the JCOA prior to joining in Dec 2023 and was elected Chair in Jan 2024. Her commitment to eldercare was prompted by her 95-year-old Mom’s diagnosis of Dementia and her subsequent realization of the dire need for senior advocacy. Deborah is an original member and grant-writer for the Southeast Regional Eldercare Coalition (SREC) Project. Deborah’s career was in Social Services/State of Alaska and she retired in 2011 to pursue hiking, skiing and travel with her husband. As a 42-year Juneau resident, she is committed to helping Juneau remain a great place to live and retire.

Lisa Wawrzonek, MA
Lisa is a 24-year veteran of adult guardianship and conservatorship case types. She is currently the Statewide Guardianship Compliance Officer for the Alaska Court System and the project lead on the courts Guardianship Improvement Program. Her previous experience was as a Court Visitor for almost 20 years and Lisa worked extensively with older adults and their families at the Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska for fifteen years. Lisa is on the Board of Directors for the National Guardianship Association.

Heather Parker, Legal Services
Heather Parker is the supervising attorney for the Southeast offices of Alaska Legal Services. She has been in that position since October 2019. Prior to working with Alaska Legal Services, she served as policy director for the governor’s office, worked in legislative affairs as an information officer and research analyst, and served as a bilingual educator for adult learners. She is based in Juneau.

Tony Newman, DSDS
Tony has worked for the State of Alaska for 23 years in various roles across the Department of Health. He became deputy director of the Division of Senior and Disabilities Services in 2020 and was appointed director in March 2023. As director he oversees all aspects of the administration and operations of the Division’s programs and services. Before joining state service Tony worked in human services nonprofits as a case manager and executive director, and before that as a journalist focused on health care. He has a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in public administration.

Cori Stennett, SAIL
Cori (she/her) is an avid adventurer who has helped many people access and experience the transformative healing power of nature. After graduating Cum Laude with a BS in Recreation Administration from Texas State University, Cori eventually found her way north and moved to Alaska in 2010 as an AmeriCorps volunteer with the SAGA (Southeast Alaska Guidance Association) program in Juneau. She has worked with teens and children of all ages through environmental education, after-school programs, peer education, and wilderness explorations. Cori is both practical and passionate; she is skilled at logistics, outreach, program management, creating community and helping others achieve their potential and personal goals. Cori lives in Haines and enjoys working at SAIL with seniors and those experiencing disabilities as the program coordinator of the Aging and Disability Resource Center.

Janine Allen, SAIL, VOICE (Veteran-Directed Care) Coordinator
Janine (she/her) coordinates SAIL’s veteran-directed care program, VOICE, in close collaboration with the VA. She’s proud to bring lived experience with a lifelong disability to her work at SAIL, and is grateful every day to live in Haines, AK, where she moved in 2010. In her spare time, she loves to read, volunteer DJ on her community radio station, and spend time with her puppy.

Dr. Lena Thompson
Dr. Lena Thompson completed her PhD in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the University of Iowa College of Public Health and is currently a Postdoc at the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Indigenous Studies working with Dr. Jordan P. Lewis on his Alaska Native Successful Aging study. Her research interests include working with older adults/Elders, exploring disaster management behaviors, designing and implementing culturally-specific interventions, and employing Community-based Participatory Research approaches.

Debbie Chulick
Debbie Chulick is a Certified Dementia Practitioner; a PAC (Positive Approach to Care) Certified Dementia Trainer; a certified TimeSlips Facilitator; and an Education Specialist/Dementia Educator working at Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska for more than 10 years. Before that, she was the Activity Director at a large assisted living facility. Debbie is passionate about empowering individuals with dementia, families, and professional caregivers to provide exceptional care for those experiencing dementia.

Rita Menzies, RN
Rita Menzies is a licensed registered nurse who resides in Juneau, Alaska. In 2021, she moved from Ketchikan to Juneau with one of her sons, Chandler, so he could move into his own home and receive home and community based services.
Rita works as a registered nurse at SEARHC and also provides training using the ABON (Alaska Board of Nursing) Medication Administration curriculum for unlicensed assistive personnel training to all employees at TIDES LLC. Rita not only brings her area of expertise as a registered nurse, but also as a parent and understands the importance and benefits of having highly trained and professional caregivers for our communities.

Kelda Barstad, LMSW
Kelda is a social worker and an advocate for systems change. She is passionate about serving people whose needs are not yet met by the existing service system and works to stitch together the social service safety net so that no one falls through the gaps. Kelda has worked for state and local government and non-profit agencies. After completing a Bachelor of Social Work from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University, Kelda has served people across the lifespan in many areas, including prenatal care and early education, public benefits, immigration benefit policy, child protective services, case management, adult protective services, rural service expansion, telehealth, senior and disability services, supportive housing, and homeless services. She is currently a Program Officer with the focus areas of Housing & Home and Community Based Services for the State of Alaska at the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority.

Thor Christianson
Thor has been an EMT III for 26 years. He is employed with the regional training center faculty for Southeast Region EMS in Sitka, Alaska. He has been teaching for the AHA for about 28 years now.
He was born and raised in Sitka, and loves living in Southeast Alaska. He currently resides on a 27-acre island with his wife and two girls.

Dr. Steffi M. Kim
Dr. Steffi M. Kim is a trained clinical community psychologist emphasizing rural and Indigenous mental health. She is an assistant professor at the University of Alaska, teaching at the graduate level to train the next generation of therapists and psychologists. In her research, she explores aging well, generativity, social connectedness, as well as dementia and dementia caregiving-related challenges within Alaska Native communities. She is currently working on establishing a statewide Alaska Native collaborative involving Alaska Native caregivers, community partners, and organizations to address the challenges of caregiving in rural communities, specifically establishing culturally tailored and appropriate resources for those communities.

Jordan P. Lewis, PhD
Jordan is Aleut/Sugpiaq and his family is from the Native Village of Naknek, AK and Cannon Beach, OR. He is the Director of Research for the Center for One Health Research at the College of Indigenous Studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He holds a Ph.D. in Community Psychology from UAF, an MSW from Washington University in St. Louis, and a BSW from UAF, and is a certified professional gerontologist. Trained as a cross-cultural community psychologist and gerontologist, Jordan has worked with American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities to identify characteristics that enable Alaska Native Elders to age successfully, or age in a good way, and become role models for their families and communities. Using the lessons and experiences of AIAN Elders, Jordan’s research develops generative-based approaches to improve the health of all generations.
Jordan’s research agenda has made significant contributions to the field with discussions on culture-specific approaches to successful aging, including the development of a model of Alaska Native successful aging, a theory of AN healthy aging, and the concept of Indigenous cultural generativity. His research has identified indigenous cultural generativity as a critical ingredient to successful aging, which has important implications for the wellbeing of AI/AN people, including those with ADRD, their caregivers, and family and community members.

Eileen Hosey, CCS/Se Senior Services Case Manager
Eileen is a 54-year resident of Juneau and loves Southeast Alaska. She raised her children here and now is seeing her grandchildren flourish and grow into wonderful young adults. She worked in Juneau in the healthcare field for about 25 years and retired for the first time in 2006. But retirement wasn’t in the cards apparently as she read an ad for Southeast Senior Services, and the rest is history.
She has worked with SE Senior Services since November 2009, and began as a care coordinator, then transitioned into case management for Juneau, Haines, and Angoon. This has been a fulfilling, busy, and productive job as it brought much needed services and information to seniors, their families, and friends. Being a senior herself, she can often identify with the emotions and situations that arise. She notes that she is becoming an outspoken advocate for senior issues and think seniors are a wonderful asset to this state.

David Howell, M.S. Dept of Labor and Workforce Development
David Howell holds a MS in Demographics from Florida State University. Since 2011 David has worked in Demographics and Analysist roles for the State of Alaska and Washington State. For the last 5 years David has been a State Demographer with the State of Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development. In this role he complies data to track migration, project out Alaska’s population by age, borough, and census area, creates annual population estimates and acts as a liaison to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Mary McEwen AHEC Coordinator, Southeast Alaska Area Health Education Center
Mary McEwen is the Southeast Alaska Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Director, based at SERRC in Juneau. She has over 20 years of professional experience with health and social services in both non-profit and governmental settings. Mary holds a BA in Sociology and a MPH in Health Policy. Her graduate work focused on how and why healthcare-related jobs and education impact human movement between rural and urban areas on both national and global levels, an interest developed during her time as a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa. Born and raised in Alaska, she believes in the AHEC mission of promoting health equity by supporting healthcare workforce for rural and traditionally underserved populations.

Cameron Young Student Program Specialist, Southeast Alaska Area Health Education Center
Cameron Young works in the Southeast Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program housed at SERRC. Her background includes working as a speech-language pathologist in Southeast and all over Alaska for over 30 years. She has been adjunct faculty at UAS in the Communications Program and Faculty at UAA in the Speech-Language Pathology program. Cameron loves combining her background as a medical professional and educator to provide Health Education focused on rural and remote communities as part of the AHEC team. Personal interests include traveling, gardening, and reading. She is currently challenging herself to learn to play the cello, knit, and flyfish!

Daniel Schramm, Injury Prevention Specialist with the State of Alaska, Injury Prevention and Surveillance Unit
Daniel began his professional experience relating to fall prevention as an investigator with Adult Protective Services where he regularly assessed in home safety of older adults. By conducting thorough assessments, he worked with individuals, families, and care providers to find caregiving solutions that ensure adult safety and independence. During this time, he completed his master’s degree in public health at UAA, where he decided to refocus his work towards the population. He worked within public health through the State of Alaska in Tobacco Prevention and Control, focusing on tailoring a program within the Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line to increase its efficacy towards the Alaska Native population. Since, March 2024, he has been engaged with the Department of Public Health Division of Injury Prevention Services as an Injury Prevention Specialist.

Alyssa is originally from California but somehow found her way to Juneau! She has been volunteering and working professionally with seniors for the last 10 years. For her Senior Living isn’t just what she does, it’s what she chooses to do, it’s what she loves to do, it’s what life has chosen for her. Aside from working with seniors, she does enjoy reading poetry, admiring the beauty of the earth, and just enjoying the simple things in life.

Mark Regan, Legal Director Disability Law Center of Alaska
Mark is a graduate of Service High School in Anchorage, and has represented people in Medicaid services and eligibility cases for many years. During the 1990s, he worked for the National Health Law Program, a Legal Services backup center, in Los Angeles, consulting with lawyers across the country on Medicaid issues. He has worked with Disability Law Center for Alaska for the last two decades.

Holly Handler, Co-Director Kin Support Program and Legal Advisor
Co-Director and Kin Legal Advisor Holly Handler has practiced law in Alaska for 21 years after graduating from Harvard Law School. She brings experience as a former child welfare attorney for Tlingit & Haida, a staff attorney for Alaska Legal Services, and a public defender. She helped found the Kin Support Program – Haa Yaitx’u Saiani out of a desire to serve grandparents and other family members who are caring for young relatives outside the foster care system without the support they deserve.

Lagemas Vanessa George, Co-Director Kin Support Program and Family Specialist
Co-Director Lagemas Vanessa George grew up with her grandmother in the community of Angoon on Admiralty Island, in Southeast. Her cultural training and skills are the foundation for her strongly held desire to uplift her community, which has lead to her various roles in public service. She will also serve as one of our two Family Specialists, bringing over a decade of experience working with families and survivors of trauma at AWARE, Tlingit & Haida, and Alaska Legal Services.

Jessie Archibald, Parent Legal Advisor of the Kin Support Program
Parent Legal Advisor Jessie Archibald graduated from the University of Puget Sound School of law and is an Alaska Native attorney with more than 20 years’ work experience. Her professional history includes serving as a staff attorney for the Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, Nisqually Indian Tribe, Sitka Tribe of Alaska and then for Alaska Legal Services Corporation providing civil legal aid to low-income and elderly Alaska residents.

Nikki Bass, Co-owner and Founder of Tides LLC
Nikki Bass is the co-owner and founder of TIDES LLC, a home and community based service provider based in Juneau, Alaska. TIDES LLC provides Medicaid funded services to individuals who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities; and is certified to support recipients with IDD/ALI/APDD/CCMC/ISW waivers. TIDES started in 2014, supporting two recipients who resided in a licensed assisted living home, and the company currently supports approximately 40 recipients throughout Juneau and employs approximately 60 Direct Support Professionals. She was an active member of the Alaska Association on Developmental Disabilities board of directors from 2022-2024, and is currently continues to support the AADD Board as a Project Assistant.
Nikki has worked in the intellectual and developmental disability field in a variety of settings for 25 years, and specifically in Juneau for over 18 of those years; and has a passion for systems change and collaboration. In July of 2014, she started the business by jumping in head first from her living room and learning the ropes as she goes; with a network of people to help answer questions along the way. She as helped multiple providers navigate the process of becoming certified/licensed/enrolled over the years, and is happy to share any knowledge and experience she can offer to enhance our region’s ability to meet the needs of individuals seeking caregiver support.

Sharyl Yeisley, Owner and Founder of Wellness Within LLC
Sharyl Yeisley is the owner and founder of Wellness Within, LLC, a care coordination agency based in Ketchikan, Alaska. Sharyl Yeisley was born and raised in Ketchikan and is Unangan (of Aleut descent). Her family lived in the Aleut Relocation Camp at Ward Lake CCC in Ketchikan. She is married to Tony Yeisley, and they have five children and six grandchildren. Wellness Within, LLC provides Care Coordination, a Medicaid funded service, to individuals who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities. Wellness Within, LLC has two certified care coordinators, Dominique King, and Sharyl Yeisley. Wellness Within, LLC is adding a third Care Coordinator, Julia Collins, this month. Wellness Within, LLC is certified to work with IDD, APDD, CCMC, ISW, CFC, ALI Waivers, and assist with TEFRA. Wellness Within, LLC started in 2023.
Sharyl has a passion for Other Abled, Elders and Veterans, dedicating her time to making sure they receive the kinds of services they need and deserve. She has over twenty years of experience in Human Services, with fifteen of those years working for with the diverse population being served by Title VI and/or Medicaid HCB services. Sharyl saw a need for Care Coordinators in her community and the outlying areas of Southeast Alaska and that inspired her to start Wellness Within, LLC. She has a desire to assist others to start-up businesses to meet the needs of vulnerable individuals in Alaska.

Martin Benning, Sr. Vice President, Chief of Clinic & Hospital Operations SEARHC
Martin Benning joined SEARHC in 2021 as Senior Vice President, Chief of Clinic & Hospital Operations. In this leadership role, Mr. Benning provides oversight of ambulatory Primary Care services and all Primary Care functions, including access, Patient Experience, quality, safety and overall performance for the SEARHC care network.
Mr. Benning brings extensive experience in the management of healthcare and medical group operations. Most recently, he held the position of Vice President, Clinical Operations and Market Integration at Kaiser Permanente in Renton, Washington, between 2018 and 2021. He initially was responsible for this service area’s strategy, leading operations and performance of nine multi-specialty medical centers. After a restructure, he oversaw the operations of all Medical and Surgical specialties, Rehabilitation, Perioperative and Procedural services in Washington.
Prior to his role at Kaiser Permanente, Mr. Benning served as the Chief Operating Officer for the Physician Services division of Providence St. Joseph Health. Mr. Benning has also held leadership positions at Swedish Health Services, Evergreen Health and Seattle Surgery Center, part of the Proliance Surgeons and HealthSouth networks.
Mr. Benning received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology as well as his Master of Health Administration at the University of Washington. He is Board-certified in Healthcare Management as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Sioux Douglas, Senior Advocate
Sioux Douglas has lived in Southeast Alaska for 47 years; 6 years in Skagway and 41 in Juneau. Now long retired, during her working years she was employed at the telephone company, managed the Legislative Teleconference Network, served as Director of the Division of Telecommunications Services for the State of Alaska, and worked twice for KTOO Public Media. While living in Skagway she co-owned and operated the Historic Skagway Inn and served as Mayor.
Sioux believes in giving back to communities she loves. She served for 10 years on the Juneau Community Foundation’s Board of Directors and for many years has served as a Trustee for the KTOO Legacy Fund. Over time her advocacy for Juneau’s senior population increased, thus for eleven years she was involved in bringing Senior Assisted Living and Housing to Juneau, which is critically needed for our elder population. She is very gratified that Riverview Senior Living is now operating in Juneau.
Sioux serves on the Southeast Regional Eldercare Coalition Steering Committee and is thrilled to help host a first-of-its-kind Eldercare Conference for Alaska’s Southeast Region. She heartily welcomes all attendees.

Kristy Hill, SERRC Workforce Development Coordinator
Kristy Hill recently joined the SERRC community as the Workforce Development Coordinator. She manages the MASST (Mature Alaskans Seeking Skills Training) program which connects low-income workers (ages 55+) to part-time and temporary community service-based paid training en route to more traditional employment. She also manages the trades training program which connects Alaskan residents to free certifications in welding, mechanics, construction, mining, healthcare or behavioral health. Kristy previously worked in the mental health field as a wellness coach and is passionate about supporting people to take actionable steps to change their lives.

Rhyan Nydam, Owner Tongass Critter Care
Rhyan Nydam owns the small local business Tongass Critter Care. Back in 2011, Rhyan slowly began the amazing journey of watching animals directly in their homes. During the pandemic, in 2020 this became a full time job!
